JAMES B. PAYTON M.D.

Hello, I am Jim Payton and I have been helping children, adolescents and their families, as well as adults, for over 30 years.  I received my medical degree, general psychiatry residency and child [and adolescent] psychiatry fellowship at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.  At that time, it was the number one ranked medical school in the United States.

I am board certified [by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology] in Psychiatry and Child Psychiatry.  I have been honored as a Distinguished Fellow by the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.  Becoming a Distinguished Fellow recognizes my excellence in clinical skills and research.  I have published studies related to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder [ADHD], Autistic Spectrum Disorders and young children's response to the death of a parent.  I have also given presentations at national meetings in psychiatry, child psychiatry and neurology.

For the past 20 years, I have focused my work on helping children, adolescents and adults who have mood disorders [mostly involving mood swings and poor responses to antidepressants]; Post Traumatic Stress Disorder [PTSD]; other chronic stress disorders; and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder [ADHD].  I have had a lot of success helping my patients with medications and also have had excellent responses helping my patients to lower their stress levels and significantly improve the quality of their lives.

After more than 25 years treating children and adolescents on inpatient units, most recently on the Copestone Child and Adolescent Inpatient Programs at the St. Joseph Campus of Mission Hospitals, I have stopped so that I can devote more time to my office practice and to my writing.

For the past 18 years, I have had my office in a home like setting at 64 Merrimon Avenue.

I am in network with the Employee Assistance Network "EAN" and Medicaid.

BETSY BIGGERS, Ph.D., LPC

At age 50, having raised three daughters with my husband, I decided to enter graduate school to study Clinical Psychology. At this time I had been in Jungian analysis for three years and felt that the Jungian approach toward helping people better understand themselves was the orientation I was seeking in route to becoming a psychotherapist.

In my search for a graduate program that combined soul and psyche, I found Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, California. For five years I commuted once a month from Asheville, North Carolina to Santa Barbara for three days of intensive study, ultimately obtaining both my Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. I have been in private practice as a psychotherapist in Asheville since 1995.  My practice includes work with adults, teenagers, children, families, and couples (straight, gay and lesbian) as well as parenting issues.

EMDR therapy stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and is a psychotherapy I have been trained in and can work with patients whose goal is to eliminate disturbing feelings associated with traumatic thoughts and memories.

STACIA CRICK-BROMMEL, MSW, LCSW

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 9 years of experience providing evidence based therapy to adolescents, children and adults. I explore ways to find the best therapy for each individual that will help him/her return to an emotional balance enabling more enjoyment in life again. I believe in the tenets of empathy and unconditional positive regard. I use an eclectic approach that includes Humanistic, Family Systems, and Gestalt therapy. Finally, I teach CBT and DBT skills to help change unhelpful behaviors and negative emotional states.

For over the last 15 years I have used the above interventions as well as solution focused and crisis intervention to treat a variety of mental health issues.  My specialties are working with people affected by trauma, personality disorders, depression and anxiety.  My experience treating these issues accumulated over the last 13 years. Currently, and for the last 7 years, I have provided mental health treatment to psychiatrically hospitalized patients. Before working in hospitals, I worked in a Domestic Violence shelter for 6 years providing therapy services to both victims and abusers.  I graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and continued my clinical training at Loyola University Chicago earning a Master of Social Work (MSW).

I am most experienced helping individuals learn how to better communicate, set boundaries and develop the empathy necessary to have truly meaningful relationships. I have found when individuals lack these skills, true relationship intimacy will not be achieved. When an individual has significant impairment in these areas, controlling behaviors flourish. I am in the process of forming the following groups:

 • Children of Narcissistic, Borderline and Histrionic Parents

 • Parenting skills

 • Anger Management skills

 • Reducing social anxiety

Are you having trouble with difficult people in your life.  I am facilitating GROUP SESSIONS, which is held every other Wednesday night to help tackle those issues.  Call us at 828-255-9228 to get the exact dates and to schedule an initial evaluation.

I am in network with Blue Cross and Blue Shield, the Employee Assistance Network "EAN", Multiplan, United Healthcare/Optum and Medicare.

JENNA WHITESIDE, MSW, LCSW

Hi, I’m Jenna Whiteside, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker providing psychotherapy to people of various ages & backgrounds for over 15 years. In 2001 I graduated with a Masters in Social Work from UC-Berkeley where I was awarded a fellowship. With specializations in direct service & mental health, I've worked both as a clinician for adults and a child & family therapist. Most of my experience has been in outpatient settings, including mental health centers in San Francisco & Asheville. I’ve also worked in schools (Oakland, CA & Jackson Co, NC), day-treatment programs, and an inpatient setting (Mission Hospital).

I have much experience in diagnosing & treating anxiety, ADHD, depression, bipolar & other mood disorders with all ages. Many of my clients have suffered significant trauma. I work with grief & loss, life transitions & adjustment to change (divorce, changes in work, family role shifts...). I work with couples & families jointly or individually, as needed, to achieve greater peace, understanding & satisfaction in relationships. I help parents who are feeling challenged or overwhelmed or want to improve relations with their children. I also teach stress & anger management to individuals & groups, along with skills to improve self-esteem, self-care, emotional regulation, personal boundaries, mindfulness, and more.

I consider the relationship between client & therapist paramount in determining outcome. I believe that achieving positive change is a collaborative process between an individual (or couple or family) & their therapist. To me this process is most meaningful & effective when therapeutic method & technique are determined first & foremost by considerations about the individual client. My approach to therapy is eclectic & multidimensional; and, while I tend to draw heavily from evidence-based interventions such as cognitive-behavioral therapy(CBT) & dialectical behavior therapy(DBT), my work with each client is ultimately based on her/his individual preferences, strengths, and (self-identified) needs.

My appreciation and respect for human beings drives my work. I am awed by the beauty and strength of the human spirit—our natural inclination to strive for health, balance & connection despite challenges. I am honored to be involved in efforts to improve the quality of people’s life experiences.
